You always have to be aware of your audience and keep them occupied and active throughout your workouts. Todays drill will cover 1 dribble jumpers coming from the corner. I developed this drill this past Sunday at a skill session at Glenbard High School for our high school skill sessions.
In this drill I want to teach players multiple things to keep their minds going. The concept is to get 1 dribble jumpshots from the mid range up while working on reading their teammates and to be late accepting the DHO.
OK so the drill setup is pretty easy as you can see and the instructions are right in the image. The teaching points here is to teach the player in the corner to be patient waiting to cut to the hand off player. For the initial DHO it is important for the player handling the ball to leave some space between them and the player in the corner. This gives the cutter space to cut back door if their defender turns their head or falls asleep.
The ball handler must come to a good jumpstop, and the player in the corner needs to be late on this and wait for the jumpstop to happen. Once the handoff player lands the corner player starts to walk towards the rim and then come off hard to the hand off. After taking the ball they dribble once towards the middle and takes a 12-15 foot jumpshot. The shooter gets their own rebound and passer replaces the shooter in the corner and you repeat the drill.
The drill makes use of multiple players as well as multiple positions. It works on not only the 1 dribble jumpshot, but also the 2 man game as far as timing, spacing, and execution. Obviously it is a drill that you can use on both ends of the floor.
Hope this helps and if you have any interest in ordering a playbook or workout booklet please click on the link on our homepage and we will be happy to help.
