I’m going to cover one aspect of pick and roll and that is using the replace big on high screen and roll. The replace big is the post player that clears space and cuts to the high post area when the screener rolls to the basket. On this diagram they will be the number 4.
HIGH SCREEN AND ROLL ALIGNMENT
This is a simple high pick & roll alignment. The 5 comes up the middle of the floor and sets a screen for the point guard. The point guard comes off 5 rolls to the rim the wing player opposite comes up to the wing just in case the point guard reverses the ball for the open wing shot. The replace big then sprints up on an angle to the elbow area.
The replace big can be a very important part to this offense. Obviously, the biggest options initially are the PG penetrating and the screener rolling to the basket. I think the PG should react to how the defense guards it. If the defense is going to show on the pick and roll and the screener’s man gets disconnected to cut off the point guards angle to the paint. As they do this 4′s man will try to clog the middle and then bump the screener rolling to the basket. The show Man (X5) will slide out twice and then sprint to the replace big. The terminology is show high stay high.
So if the point guard can stretch out the defense especially the screener’s defender and the roll man can roll hard to the rim forcing X4 to bump and the rest of the floor is spaced out the replace big will have an open shot at the 15 foot mark. Easier said than done indeed, but if you have a guard that can make good passes the replace big can be a weapon.
OPTION 1 THE JUMPSHOT
So the first option we will work on is getting the replace big the ball for at the elbow area for a jumper. I think the best way to work on this is to go 3-0 to get the spacing and timing down and then add defense with realistic rotations and energy. Here is a simple 3-0 shell offensive drill to get the simple make up of hitting the replace big.
On this drill it is as simple as it looks. You can build up on every option. First having the PG take their mid range jumper or drive to the paint, then hitting the screener rolling and then hitting the replace big just to set up the scenario.
LIVE 4-4 WITH DEFENSIVE ROTATIONS
Once your players understand the options on high screen & roll it is a good idea to start adding defense to it. You can start with only 3-3 if you want, on screen and roll action I like to have 4-4 so you can add the weak side shooter and defender to it. Here is what it looks like.
Here is what I was talking about. It’s important to understand that teams defend differently. On this example on the high screen & roll the screeners man shows on the point guard to cut off their angle. The 5 rolls and X4 bumps and takes 5 to protect the basket form an easy lay up. The shooting guard starts to move up the three point line to the wing area. X2 in the diagram moves up with them, but in other situations they will get on 4′s top foot until they move up the lane to protect the paint and then close to 2. It is important to have good energy on the defensive end for your offense to get more efficient. Stress your rollers to roll hard because if X4 rotates on the bump late you can get a deep post touch or layup on it.
OPTION 2 LOOK INSIDE FOR ROLLER DUCKING IN
After the replace big catches the ball on the elbow area the first option is to look shot. If the shot isn’t open the second thing that they should do is look inside for a possible high low situation with the roller. Make sure that you are having your rollers that don’t get the ball make sure they focus in on where the ball is if they don’t get it. A lot of times high lows or duck in opportunities present themselves. So on your shell offense for the next option add the look inside option. Here we will show the duck in on the live 4-4.
For your post player’s development always stress looking inside when they catch the ball in the high post area. Adding a passing skill component to your big men will add a lot of value to your team and the things that you can do as a team.
OPTION 3 BALL REVERSAL
The final option for your replace big is to look weak side. That other wing could be open for a shot, a drive, a pick and roll, or to post up the replace big after they catch. Lets work on the pick and roll. Here is our shell offense drill as we add the other wing player to the mix. The same emphasis is put on the replace the look inside, but now we are adding the pass to the wing and screen and roll.
Here it is the same shell offense drill that we used with hitting the replace big for the jumper, here they catch and see that there is no shot, look inside for a high low, now look to the reverse wing for a screen&roll/DHO, Kick and Post situation.
HIGH S&R HIT REPLACE WING S&R LIVE
Here is a look at it live and how it impacts the defense
By running this option on high screen and roll it puts pressure on the defense defending multiple screen and rolls on a single possession. The most important point here is the ability to stretch the defense out on penetration, space the floor, and make quick passes puts the defense on their heels.
Hopefully this helped I think by having good spacing, having your ball handlers set defenders up into the screen, and your screeners making contact on defenders your screen and roll offense can be very effective.
